Revealing interviews

Had a great session (albeit sobering) at Writers group this week, thanks to Jen. She devised 11 questions as a mock interview of an author (eg Oprah interviewing a best selling author) hilarious but revealing.

One of the questions related to who your favourite character was in your book. I realised I didn't like my main character all that much, preferring the smart, brittle counsellor Caroline. Could that be why my novel is not leaping from the page? Have I really got to start all over again...for the umpteenth time? I drove home sober and thoughtful.

Looking through the NSW Writers Magazine last night I found an insert about a Varuna writing fellowship being offered, submissions due at the end of the month. It is for works in progress that need help. I fit the bill there! They want 14 pages and a synopsis. I immediately started on a new opening to the novel. I think it will be easier than I first thought given that the plot and the characters remain the same. Am planning to send 7 pages each of the two editions. Hope that works. Won't know until October whether I qualify, perfect. I'll be on holiday during that time.

Next blog will be about Flash fiction which we're going to do at the next Wrting group meeting.
